About the Alternative Learning Center
The Alternative Learning Center (ALC) in southeast Baltimore City opened its doors for students in April 1999, a second site was added in February 2001 and a third site was opened in the April 2003. The ALC East is located in Southeast Baltimore in a lower wing of Lombard Middle School. ALC West, which opened in 2001, is located in Northwest Baltimore in a lower wing of Roland Patterson Middle School. ALC Northwest, which opened in April 2003, is located in a lower wing of West Baltimore Middle School. ALC was created out of a need to provide a quality education and an intense counseling program for students who have committed a level three offense as outlined by the Baltimore City Public School System (BCPSS) Discipline Code of Conduct.
The Alternative Learning Centers were designed to serve 100 students at the East and West sites and approximately thirty special education students at the Southwest site. To date, as of April 2003, the Southeast Center provides services for 87 students in grades six through ten.
The West site provides services for 83 students in grades six to eight. ALC also provides an Alternative Educational Setting (AES) Program for special education students at each of its’ locations. The West location services approximately ten students, the Southeast location services fifteen, and the Southwest location services approximately 15 students with special needs.
