Activities and Service Learning
An all girls organization sponsored by female staff members providing opportunities to discuss issues and explore topics relevant to today’s young women. The club meets once each month.
An all male organization sponsored by the male staff members to provide ALC’s male students with an opportunity to discuss issues and explore topics relevant to their needs. The club meets once each month.
The Basement Band is an island style steel band that plays music of today and yesterday in venues ranging from other public schools to charity events. The band meets weekly.
- Beans and Bread – A Service Learning Project that allows students to work in a neighborhood soup kitchen once a month. Students help to prepare and serve meals, wash dishes, and talk to clients. Students share their experiences with peers and discuss the problems and solutions of homelessness.
- City Springs Elementary School Project – The Alternative Learning Center in collaboration with City Springs Elementary School offers service learning hours and work study opportunities for our high school students. Students work with the primary teachers as classroom aides. ALC tutors/workers read to students, provide review and enrichment opportunities for primary students, and assist with classroom clerical duties.
